G-P provides employer of record services for customers that want to hire employees and run payroll without first establishing a branch office or subsidiary in Malta. Your candidate is hired via G-P’ Malta PEO in accordance with local labor laws and can be onboarded in days instead of the months it typically takes. The individual is assigned to work on your team, working on your company’s behalf exactly as if he or she were your employee to fulfill your in-country requirements.

Our solution enables customers to run payroll in Malta while HR services, tax, and compliance management matters are lifted from their shoulders onto ours. As a Global PEO expert, we manage employment contract best practices, statutory and market norm benefits, and employee expenses, as well as severance and termination if required. We also keep you apprised of changes to local employment laws in Malta.

Your new employee is productive sooner, has a better hiring experience and is 100% dedicated to your team. You’ll have peace of mind knowing you have a team of dedicated employment experts assisting with every hire. G-P allows you to harness the talent of the brightest people in more than 185 countries around the world, quickly and painlessly.

Hiring in Malta

Malta is located in Europe and has a population of approximately 450,000. The capital city of Valletta has a population of 6,315. Malta comprises 122 square miles, making it one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in the world.

When negotiating terms of an employment contract and offer letter with an employee in Malta, it may be useful to keep the following in mind:

Employment Contracts in Malta

In Malta, employment contracts can be oral or written, but it is best practice to put a strong, written contract in place, in English or Maltese, which spells out the terms of the employee’s compensation, benefits, and termination requirements. Contracts can be indefinite or fixed term (up to a maximum of four years) and the normal working hours are 40 per week. An offer letter and employment contract in Malta should always state the salary and any compensation amounts in Euros rather than a foreign currency. The probationary period can be up to 12 months. For any service longer than one month, a one-week notice period applies upon termination. The employment contract template is part of the service with G-P; no need to draft a separate template if you use our employer of record and PEO service in Malta.

Holidays in Malta

Malta observes 14 holiday days. When a public holiday falls on a non-working day, full-time employees are entitled to an additional vacation day in lieu, to be taken during the same calendar day. The date can be granted by the employer according to the wished of the employee.

Vacation Days in Malta

Full-time employees are entitled to a minimum of 24 working days per annum. Holiday entitlement begins from the commencement of employment and runs in accordance with the calendar year.

Employees may carry forward up to 50% of their annual leave entitlement to the following calendar year if agreed with the employer.

A minimum period equivalent to four weeks cannot be replaced by any remuneration, except in case of termination. Upon termination, any outstanding leave should be compensated financially.
