Creating a team with dedicated professionals who bring unique perspectives and qualifications to the company is vital to organizational success. When companies need to create an international team, they will want the right people — whatever borders they may need to cross to get to them.

G-P understands that teams are, in many ways, a company’s most significant asset. We can help companies hiring international employees stay compliant as they grow their business in Liechtenstein.

Types of work visas

International employees will need a residence and work permit to enter the country and start working. Employees must meet specific criteria to gain permission to work in Liechtenstein and fit into one of the following categories:

  • Managers
  • Specialists
  • Skilled workers
  • Workers with many years of experience

If employers are able to provide proof of their international employees’ expertise and qualifications, they will likely be able to obtain permission for them to work in the country.

What you need to get a visa

There is some essential documentation required to obtain a Liechtenstein work visa:

  • Passport photos
  • A current passport
  • Payment for the visa fee
  • A completed visa application form
  • Proof of adequate qualifications for the job position

How to get a work visa in Liechtenstein

Some citizens will not need a visa to enter the country for short-term stays of up to 90 days, and others may not need visas at all. Companies should consult the nearest embassy or consulate to determine the requirements for employees and learn about current immigration policies. During the consultation with the embassy, the employer must be prepared to discuss their employees’ nationalities and statuses to find the best option for their employment in Liechtenstein.

Obtaining all the necessary documentation and filing it with the appropriate agencies can take time, and companies may also have a lengthy wait for processing. They must begin the visa application process with ample time to get approval for employees before they need them to arrive in Liechtenstein. While the requirements may differ slightly for each employee, companies can expect the process to involve some basic steps:

  1. Discuss each employee’s requirements for visa application with the nearest embassy.
  2. Gather all the necessary records, identification documents, and other critical information. Ensure all the details are accurate and up to date.
  3. Submit all documents along with the application to the embassy.
  4. Wait for application approval, confirm any next steps, and ensure employees have all the required documentation to enter the country.

Other considerations

While European Economic Area (EEA) employees do not need to obtain work permits in Liechtenstein, most will need residency permits to work long-term. A total of 72 residency permits are issued to EEA citizens each year, including 56 permits issued to individuals who are engaged in gainful employment and 16 to individuals who are not engaged in gainful employment. Half of these permits are issued by drawing lots, while the other half is issued directly by the national government.

Exactly 17 residency permits are issued to Swiss citizens each year, including 12 permits issued to individuals engaged in gainful employment and the remaining 5 to those who are not engaged in gainful employment. These permits are issued by the national government.

Because visa and residency requirements vary depending on the employee’s citizenship, companies will need to manage applications on a case-by-case basis.
